TNFD Launches New Capacity-Building Platform to Strengthen Market Confidence on Nature-Related Issues

ESGVoices

Recognizing the urgent need for upskilling on nature-related financial disclosures, the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) has launched two new capacity-building tools. These platforms aim to equip businesses, financial professionals, and training providers with the knowledge and skills necessary to integrate nature-related considerations into financial decision-making.

TNFD Capacity Building: Addressing the Demand for Nature-Focused Financial Education

With over 1,700 organizations engaged in the TNFD Forum, 20 Consultation Groups worldwide, and more than 520 TNFD Adopters, the demand for practical training on nature-related financial risks and opportunities has surged. TNFD’s guidance materials have already been downloaded over 300,000 times since the release of the recommendations in September 2023.

To meet this demand, TNFD has introduced two accessible learning platforms:

  1. The Learning Lab – A self-guided educational tool for professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of TNFD recommendations and nature-related financial issues.

  2. The Trainer Portal – A structured resource for training providers and academic institutions to integrate TNFD-aligned content into their sustainability education programs.

The TNFD Learning Lab: A Self-Guided Learning Experience

The Learning Lab is designed for individuals at all levels, from beginners to seasoned professionals, who want to build expertise in nature-related financial risks and disclosures. It offers nine modules covering key TNFD recommendations and nature-focused business considerations.

Features include:

  • Video lectures and expert-led webinars

  • Case studies and interactive exercises

  • Personalized learning profiles to track progress

  • Regular content updates to reflect evolving best practices

The TNFD Trainer Portal: A Comprehensive Resource for Training Providers

To expand the reach of TNFD’s educational initiatives, the Trainer Portal provides in-house corporate training teams, academic institutions, and professional trainers with white-label training content.

Developed in collaboration with the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL), these materials include:

  • Presentation decks and instructional guides

  • Case study discussions and breakout group exercises

  • Customizable content tailored to different sectors and regions

By offering structured learning modules, the Trainer Portal ensures consistency while allowing for flexibility in training delivery. A Train-the-Trainer program, recently launched in January 2025, has already equipped 40 trainers from 27 organizations across 16 countries with the knowledge and tools to facilitate TNFD-aligned education.

Industry Collaboration and Global Implementation

The TNFD’s capacity-building efforts are being amplified through partnerships with key financial and sustainability organizations, including:

  • Sustainable Stock Exchanges Initiative (SSEI), which will introduce TNFD training programs to listed companies worldwide.

  • CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project), which is integrating TNFD-aligned guidance into corporate reporting standards.

  • UN SSE, UNEP FI, and PRI, are working to align TNFD recommendations with broader sustainability disclosure frameworks.

  • World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), leveraging TNFD materials to expand training across industries.

The Role of Capacity Building in Advancing Nature-Positive Finance

According to Tony Goldner, Executive Director of TNFD,

"Businesses and investors increasingly recognize that long-term financial resilience is intertwined with nature resilience. By providing accessible, high-quality learning resources, TNFD aims to build market confidence and equip organizations with the skills needed to assess, report, and act on nature-related issues."

Industry leaders have praised the initiative:

  • Sébastien Soleille (French Banking Association):

"The Taskforce’s work building the TNFD recommendations was only one step in the overall goal of supporting business and finance in integrating nature into decision-making. It’s now necessary to ensure the market has the confidence and skills to assess, report and act on nature-related issues."

  • Madeleine Ronquest (FirstRand Group Ltd):

"To scale up much-needed action on nature, it’s crucial that we build the market’s capabilities to act. TNFD’s capacity-building efforts and the announcement of these two new tools will play a critical role in this effort to build knowledge and awareness at speed and at scale."

  • Simon Thompson (Global Capacity Building Coalition):

"Building awareness, enhancing knowledge and skills and creating an expert and engaged community of educators and practitioners are all key elements of successful capacity building. On behalf of the Global Capacity Building Coalition (GCBC) I warmly welcome the TNFD’s new Learning Lab and Trainer Portal."

The launch of the TNFD Learning Lab and Trainer Portal marks a significant step in mainstreaming nature-related financial education. By building capabilities at scale, these tools will enable companies to integrate nature considerations into their business strategies and investment frameworks, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable global economy.
